Meet Joseph Harrison
Master-level Student Counselor
Joseph Harrison is a second-year student in the University of the Cumberlands’ Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, with an expected graduation in December 2024. His journey into psychology began at age 11 when he discovered psychological terms in the dictionary, sparking a lifelong passion for the field. This early interest has led him to become certified in TEAM-CBT and receive advanced training in Gestalt therapy. Joseph also has a profound personal interest in Carl Jung’s analytical psychology, particularly shadow work. His therapeutic style combines psychodynamic therapy with a person-centered approach, focusing on addressing the root causes of emotional issues.
Outside of his academic and professional endeavors, Joseph emphasizes his well-being through activities like exercise, reading, and watching movies. As a seasoned athlete, he has completed numerous marathons and ultra-marathons, including distances up to 45 miles. Joseph advocates for a holistic approach to self-care, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in achieving overall health and fulfillment.

With a strong background in business, holding both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Joseph offers a unique perspective to mental health counseling. After 15 years in the banking industry, his transition to counseling reflects his commitment to making a meaningful impact on people’s lives. His professional experience includes roles as a crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line and a caregiver in a residential treatment facility for adolescents.
