What Is EMDR ?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a research-backed psychotherapy approach designed for working with distressing or traumatic memories. The theory behind it is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in memory properly and are said to be unprocessed or blocked.

These traumatic memories may need professional intervention to become fully processed, and EMDR is a highly effective way to do this. By utilizing specialized trauma-informed therapy, we help you unlock these “stuck” memories so they no longer disrupt your daily life.

Understanding Traumatic Memories

Normal memories are stored by a part of the brain called the hippocampus. Think of it as a sort of librarian which catalogues (processes) events and stores them in the right place. However, some traumatic events are so overwhelming that the “librarian” doesn’t do its job properly.

When this happens, memories are stored in their raw, unprocessed form. These trauma memories are easily triggered, leading them to replay and cause distress over and over. Normally, memories are filed away safely, but some experiences are so overwhelming the memories remain “raw.” Our goal is to help you reclaim your life from trauma by moving these memories into a healthy, processed state.

What is EMDR Used to Treat?

There is very good evidence that EMDR is an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for PTSD.

EMDR is also an effective treatment for other conditions, particularly those involving managing anxiety under pressure or other distressing life events. Whether you are dealing with a single major incident or years of accumulated stress, EMDR provides a structured path toward emotional regulation and long-term relief.

Treatment Duration

Sessions are sometimes slightly longer than typical therapy sessions. The number of sessions needed will depend on the type and severity of trauma which you experienced. Some clients see significant movement in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can EMDR help with anxiety?2026-03-25T13:56:24-04:00

Yes. Many people use EMDR to treat the root causes of anxiety, specifically if those feelings are tied to past failures, social rejections, or stressful life transitions. We often combine EMDR with grounding techniques to reduce stress in your daily life.

How many sessions does EMDR require?2026-03-25T13:55:16-04:00

The number of sessions depends on your unique history. Some find relief from a single event in a few sessions, while complex or long-term trauma may require a longer commitment. Your therapist will create a personalized plan with you.

Is EMDR better than talk therapy?2026-03-25T13:54:41-04:00

While talk therapy is excellent for insight, EMDR focuses specifically on how the brain stores information. It doesn’t always require you to go into extensive verbal detail, making it a powerful alternative for those who find talking about their past too overwhelming. It is designed to desensitize the memory so it no longer triggers a fight-or-flight response.

How do I know if trauma is affecting me?2026-03-25T13:54:18-04:00

Trauma often manifests as “raw” memories that feel as though they are happening in the present. You may experience flashbacks, heightened anxiety, or emotional “flooding” when triggered. If you feel “stuck” in a past event, your brain may need help processing those unprocessed memories.
